Something Happened Here: A Derelict Corridor Lighting Study

Base environment: Quixel Megascans' Derelict Corridor kit (via Fab/Bridge). I didn't build the space — every light, shadow, atmosphere pass, and story beat below is my own work on top of it.
---
This started as a straight lighting exercise and turned into a small mystery along the way.
---
The goal was a fully physically-based lighting setup built from a blank slate — real-world light units, EV/exposure locked to a specific time of day, and illumination that reads differently depending on how close a space sits to a window versus how deep it sits in the building's interior. That zoned approach comes out of studying Karim Yasser's and the CGFoundry community's PBL methodology, and getting the balance right — without leaning on faked fill light to hold the far side of a room — was most of the actual work here.
---
Atmosphere came from BVG Ultra Volumetrics for the core volumetric fog, layered with William Faucher's EasyToolBag, EasyFog, and EasyAtmos for Niagara-driven particulate and depth. DRKR's camera and filmback presets shaped the staging and lens language across the set — I was chasing something closer to a National Geographic or Discovery Channel documentary frame than a traditional cinematic composition: observational, matter-of-fact, letting the space carry the tension instead of the camera doing it for me.
I leaned into the derelict setting with some narrative dressing of my own on top of the base kit — added decals, staging, and a handful of details that suggest this space's story doesn't end with simple abandonment. A warning scrawled in red. Stains that don't belong to rust or grime. I'll let the shots do most of the talking on that front.
